Shelly Birmingham was born December 17, 1981 to Routt Emmett and Titia Scull in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her grandfather, the late C.E. Scull, was a WWII veteran and local farmer and rancher. Her dad is a cotton ginner. She grew up in the rural town of Robstown, Texas attending Tuloso-Midway schools. She was actively involved with FFA and Deca. She raised market broilers for livestock shows, studied animal husbandry, horticulture, and agribusiness. Shelly always loved horses, but never could afford one as a child.
In 2000, after high school, she met and married a team roper and forgot about everything else. In 2002, she had her first little wrangler Kassidy Nicole. In 2003, she achieved her Realtors license so she could sell the land across Texas. In 2004, she had her second ranch hand Kylie Ruthe.
Her husband, Leonard, bought himself a paint horse from a good friend of the families to finish on the heels. Thats when Shelly got the taste of barrel racing. Turns out this little gelding was a barrel horse and she stole him from Leonard. Since then she has acquired the expensive hobby of collecting quarter horses. This is her rookie season with PAFRA. She has only been riding a year and hopes to be able to keep up with her best friend Sunshine and her Doc and Billy horses.
